When it comes to baby showers, sometimes you don’t know what to gift someone, or you think you know what you should gift someone. I didn’t know what I was going to need when it came to my first baby, so I was gifted a lot of great things, and some other things that, unfortunately, were not used. If you are looking for gift ideas for someone’s baby shower or you are having your own baby shower but want to be detailed with what you need, here are five perfect gifts for a new mom’s baby shower.
Diapers
You CANNOT go wrong with buying someone diapers. I don’t think I ever had too many diapers when it came to that first year, especially during those first few months with a baby. If it is someone’s first baby, they probably aren’t too particular about what brand of diapers they want, but just in case ask them if they have any preferences. Diaper brands that I used for my first child were Huggies Little Snugglers and Pampers Swaddlers. I started with Huggies because I loved how soft the material was, but ended up switching over to Pampers because diaper blowouts were less likely to happen for my first in those. It depends on each baby, but either brand is a great option, in my opinion. I have also heard great things about Honest Co. and their diapers, if you want to gift something more organic and good for baby.
Wipes
Just like diapers, you can never have too many wipes. Wipes are a necessity and can be used for just about any mess the baby, or mom, has. Mom is going to want to stock up on those wipes! Again, ask her if she has a preferred brand, but if it’s her first she probably doesn’t. The Huggies Natural Care wipes are liked in my household, but we mainly go for Sam’s Club wipes because…well, we get a ton of wipes and it’s not as expensive as other brands. A more natural option are WaterWipes.
Books
My husband thinks we have too many books, but I don’t think there is such thing as too many books. Books can be cherished forever by baby and mom. So many special and wonderful memories can be made when it is storytime. Reading to your child is an amazing habit to form and is very beneficial for babies. So buy the mom a book or two! Board books are great because the baby can’t rip the pages, and many classic books now have a board book version.
Pajamas
Usually, mom’s are gifted the cutest little outfits for their little one to wear sometime during those first few months, but let’s be realistic. Mom’s need something quick and easy to change their little one in and out of as the blowouts and spit-up messes happen continuously every day. My plan for my second baby, due in the Fall, is to only have her in footie pajamas those first few months. She can have a special Christmas dress, a Thanksgiving outfit, some church dresses, but besides that I think it is too cold and too much work to be putting her into a bunch of cute outfits that she will make a mess of in just a few short hours.
Pajamas are practical, easy, and you can buy them at any baby store you go into. Stick with 0-3 months (3-6 months max) for the baby because it is hard to determine how quickly, or slowly, a baby may grow out of sizes.
Buy off the Registry
Most new moms will have created a registry for their new little babe, which is a great place to see what has been purchased and what the new mom feels she needs. Not a lot of people bought items off of my registry, so there were items I ended up purchasing myself because I needed them. If on the invite you see the new mom is registered, then be sure to check out the registry if you don’t want to use one of the ideas listed above!
This is not a huge list, but you don’t need to get a mom too much for her baby shower. Sometimes less is more. She will be showered with so many gifts, but she will really appreciate and use a practical gift for her baby. What is a practical gift you got at your baby shower that you really appreciated? Is there anything you would add to my list?
Amen to buying off the registry! That’s what it’s there for! I also got hand sanitizer for all the family and friends who would be visiting my newborn to use and it was super helpful.
